Tooth Loss and Heart Disease - What You Need to Know

A man suffering from a missing tooth.
Losing a tooth is not something that anyone wants to have happen, but if it does, you need to make sure you are tracking your overall health, too. Typically, tooth decay only happens when your body is also battling something else.

This can lead to issues within your mouth, causing the type of decay that would lead to you losing your teeth. If you have other risk factors for heart disease and now you have a tooth that's been lost to decay, you may want to see your doctor about whether or not you have early stage heart disease.

Factors for Heart Disease to Be On the Lookout For

Heart disease is known as a silent killer because for much of the disease, you do not feel any different. You show no outward symptoms that aren't common with normal, everyday ailments. However, tooth loss is not an everyday occurrence.

High cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, and smoking can all impact your heart, as well as your mouth. When your teeth start to decay to the point of needing extraction, you will often find that your heart is struggling to keep you healthy, too. Take the time to seek both your doctor's and your dentist's advice on how to keep your body healthy.

Make an appointment to see both of the people tasked with keeping you healthy. Your doctor can run some tests and see how healthy your heart is. Your dentist can do an exam and see how healthy your mouth is.

They may need to work together to keep your whole body healthy, but if you know what it is you are battling, it makes the task a lot more manageable. If you want to find out more about the relationship between losing your teeth and heart disease, contact our office today.
