What Are Signs of TMJ?

Posted on 3/25/2018 by Office Manager
TMJ Anchorage Dental Associates AK 99503-2838What is TMJ? Also known as Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction or TMJ Dysfunction, but we shorten it down to just TMJ because most people have trouble pronouncing the word Temporomandibular.

The temporomandibular joint is like a sliding hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull and you have one joint on each side of your jaw. A TMJ disorder can cause pain in your jaw and your muscles that allows you to move your jaw.

The temporomandibular joint is a bone that is covered by cartilage. Your bones are separated by a very small disk that will absorb shock and lets your bones move smoother when you move your jaw.

There is no exact cause of TMJ, your pain can be a combination of things, like genetics, you could have arthritis, or if you had an injury to your jaw. Also, if you have jaw pain its most likely because of clenching or grinding your teeth. However, there are many people that grind their teeth and they will not develop TMJ.

In most cases TMJ disorders can be cured with personal care or it can be treated with nonsurgical procedures. Surgery will be a last resort deal; surgery will be performed if all other treatments have failed. Now let's discuss the signs of TMJ.

Signs and Symptoms of TMJ

•  Do you have pain or tenderness in your jaw?
•  If you have pain in one or both of the joints.
•  Do you have a dull aching pain in or around your ear?
•  Do you have any difficulty chewing or have any pain while chewing?
•  Face pain.
•  Do the joints in your jaw lock up? Any difficulty opening or closing your mouth?

People who have TMJ will also hear a clicking noise when they chew, open or close your mouth. But if there is no pain or any limitation of movement that's associated with this then there is a possibility that you will not need any treatment.

You will need to come in and see us immediately if you have persistent pain in your jaw or if your jaw is tender, if you can't open or close your jaw completely. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call us.
