What Happens When a Tooth Breaks?

Posted on 10/10/2018 by Office Manager
What Happens When a Tooth Breaks?Doubtless, you have experienced an episode where you thought you may have broken a tooth. There you were, happily chomping along, when suddenly you bit into something that didn't give.

Fortunately, most of the time these episodes are little more than a scare, but every now and then you actually do break a tooth. So, what happens when you actually break one of your teeth? Depending on the type of the tooth, and the location of the break, the complications can range from mild to quite severe.

Breaking a Tooth Can Harm Other Tissue as Well

One thing that many people never stop to consider is what happens to the surrounding soft tissue in the mouth. If the break is high up on the tooth, it may well be that the soft tissue escapes unscathed. But, in many cases, the break is lower on the tooth, and it affects the gum tissue around the tooth.

When a tooth breaks, there is the potential for injury to the gums in the area as a result of tooth fragments being driven into the tissue. In some cases, if the break travels below the gum line, a large piece of the tooth can act as a cutting edge to lacerate the tissue.

What Should You Do When a Tooth Breaks?

Obviously, you need to come see us right away. If there are any pieces of your tooth that come out, place them in a container with cold milk (or cold water if you don't have milk). Bring them with you.
To care for the soft tissue, gently place a cold compress in the area. This will reduce bleeding and swelling, and should help with the pain.

Breaking a tooth is never fun. But by following this advice you can maximize your chances of getting through it with as little permanent damage as possible.
