Tooth Replacement with Dental Implants
Anchorage Dentist

Tooth loss is a serious issue that causes several complications. Losing your teeth leads to difficulties with eating and speaking. Your smile deteriorates, as does your confidence. Tooth loss also impacts the health of your jawbone, leading to bone loss in the jaw. This bone loss affects the shape of your jaw, which can affect tooth alignment as well as the appearance of your face. Replacing missing teeth is essential for restoring the functions of your missing teeth as well as your quality of life. At Anchorage Dental Associates, we can replace missing teeth with dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a modern treatment for replacing missing teeth, providing you with an alternative to traditional bridges and dentures. This treatment uses small titanium posts, which are surgically placed into your jawbone. As you heal, your jawbone gradually fuses to the posts, stabilizing them within your jaw. This process, called osseointegration, turns the posts into roots that provide secure support for your replacement teeth.

Types of Dental Implants

There are some different types of dental implants, allowing us to meet some different needs. Types of dental implants include
•  Single tooth. This type of treatment is used to replace an individual tooth. A single post provides support for a single crown.
•  Multiple teeth. A multiple teeth implant also called an implant supported bridge, replaces two or more teeth in a row. The number of posts required depends on how many teeth are missing and your jawbone.
•  Full arch restorations. A full arch restoration replaces an entire arch of teeth, taking the place of a traditional full denture. Typically, this treatment uses 6 to 8 implant posts to provide the support needed for your new teeth.
•  All on 4. All on 4 is a type of treatment that uses only four posts to provide support for a full arch restoration. This treatment is used when your jawbone is too weak to support 6 to 8 posts and also helps to avoid the need for a bone graft.

What to Expect During Implant Placement

Placing dental implants requires a surgical procedure, which is done under a local anesthetic and sedation. Surgery begins with small incisions in your gums, which provides us with access to your jawbone. Next, small holes are drilled into the jawbone, and the implant posts are placed directly inside. Your gums are then sutured closed around the posts, leaving a small portion exposed above the gum line. Finally, temporary teeth are placed. They are meant to stay in place until you have fully healed.

Your recovery can take several weeks to several months to complete. During this time, several follow up visits allow us to ensure that your jawbone is properly fusing to the posts and that there are no complications. Once you have fully healed, the temporary teeth are removed, and the abutments or connectors are placed. We take an impression of your mouth, which our dental lab uses to design and create your final dental restorations. Once they have been completed, we check them for fit and secure them into place with small screws. Once in place, the teeth are not removed, unless professional maintenance is needed.

Benefits of Dental Implants

There are many benefits associated with dental implants. These benefits include
•  A more natural appearance. Your dental restorations are made from ceramic, a material that perfectly mimics the properties of your natural teeth.
•  Feeling and functioning just like real teeth. Your dental restorations allow you to eat all of your favorite foods again. Your speech is also perfectly restored.
•  Secure teeth. Your teeth are held securely in place with small screws. They will not slip around or fall out.
•  Greater comfort. Your new teeth are supported by the implant posts rather than your gums or adjacent teeth.
•  Easy to care for. Your dental restorations can be brushed and flossed just like your real teeth.
•  Preservation of your jawbone. The posts act like tooth roots and restore stimulation to your jawbone. This helps to maintain the health and strength of your jawbone, stopping and preventing bone loss.

With dental implants, not only are we able to help restore the functions of your missing teeth, but we are also able to stop the loss of bone mass in your jaw, something that cannot be achieved with any other replacement option.
