At Anchorage Dental Associates, we are proud to offer many restorative dental options to bring your teeth back to their normal, healthy state. When a tooth experiences infection (cavities) or trauma, sometimes they are left in a state where they cannot continue functioning. To avoid extraction, we will many times save the tooth using a dental crown. Dental crowns are caps that sit over the top of the tooth that needs restoration and acts as the new crown of the tooth.
Normally crowns take at least two visits to our Anchorage, AK office to place, but thanks to this Same day crown technology that we have adopted we can save you time and money while giving you the same quality dental crowns. Check out our Same Day Crowns Technology!
Reasons for Choosing a Dental Crown
There are a few different reasons people tend to need dental crowns:
Fractured or broken teeth due to trauma
Decay that reaches deep into the tooth
Fillings that have fractured or need to be replaced
Following root canal therapy to protect the tooth
Dental Crown Materials
Types of Dental Crowns
There are four common materials that we use to craft dental crowns. We will always help you to choose the best option for you:
All Porcelain: Porcelain is a very common material used in dental restorations because of how well it mimic the appearance of natural teeth. Porcelain is a strong, long-lasting material that resists stains better than your natural teeth. Most commonly used to restore teeth that are featured in the smile.
Gold: Gold has been used in dentistry for thousands of years. Today it remains one of the best options for dental work because of its strength and durability. People often say that gold feels much more like a natural tooth than any of the other options. Gold is one of the longest lasting restoration materials.
Porcelain Fused to Metal: This is a solution that allows us to combine the beauty of porcelain and the strength of metal. Normally porcelain is not strong enough to withstand the bite pressures associated with the molars, but porcelain fused to metal crowns allow us a nice compromise.
Ceramic: Ceramic restorations are impressive because of both their strength and their aesthetic value. We can craft ceramic crowns on a mill that we have in our office in a very short period. This allows us to offer same day crowns, an option that is more easy and convenient to our patients.
The Dental Crown Procedure
Recommended Prosthetic Materials
Receiving a dental crown typically takes two visits to our office to complete, unless you opt for the same day crown procedure. During the first visit to our office, we will take an impression of your tooth that we will use to create a replica of your tooth. We will prepare the tooth to receive the dental crown by shaving off the outer layer of enamel. Finally, we will place a temporary crown over your tooth.
During your follow-up appointment, we will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent one.
