Spring Foods that May Stain Your Teeth

Spring is officially here! It's time for outdoor get-togethers with family and friends and celebrate the warmer seasons.

Where there's a picnic or barbeque, there's bound to be people taking pictures. A bright, white smile is a must. But are your favorite spring foods dulling your teeth?

It's almost time to head out to the backyard with a basket and pick fresh berries for your morning pancakes. As good as fresh berries are, and as healthy as they are, they can cause staining to your teeth, particularly those that are darker in color. Blackberries, blueberries and cherries (to name a few) contain dark pigments that can stick to your enamel and seep in. Not only that, but they are also highly acidic.

Beets are rich in antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and can even help in detoxification. They can be prepared in several different ways, from boiled to roasted, even pickled. They can be thrown raw into a smoothie or grated over a salad. But have you ever cut into a beet and watched the juices stain your cutting board, your knife and your fingers? The same pigments that stained your hands can also stain your teeth.

Tomatoes are used everywhere in spring cuisine, from raw on salads and burgers, to salsa and sauces. They are also highly acidic, which can cause staining on your teeth.

With spring comes Easter, and lots of sweets. Candies that are coated with artificial colors not only turn your tongue a lot of interesting colors, they can also leave unsightly stains on your teeth.

Foods aren't the only thing that can stain your teeth. What you drink can play a role, too. Drinks that can stain include:

•  Your morning cup of coffee.
•  Tea.
•  Wine, especially red varietals.
•  A staple of spring and summer barbeques: soda.

How to Avoid Stains

Just because these foods cause stains doesn't mean that you need to avoid them altogether. Limiting your consumption of them can be a great help. But you must take other steps as well. Follow staining foods and beverages with a glass of water to wash pigments and acids away before they have a chance to set. And don't forget to brush and floss your teeth every day.
