Talking to a Scared Loved One About Visiting the Dentist

Posted on 5/27/2017 by Office Manager
A woman afraid of the dentist.
If you have a loved one that needs dental care, but is nervous about going to the dentist, this can be a difficult conversation. You do not want to be rude, but you are worried about their health. The best thing you can do is be polite when you speak to them.

Explain your concerns, and offer your help when it comes time to finding a gentle dentist. That may be all some people need to feel a bit more confident.

Getting a Loved One Into the Dentist

It can be hard to convince loved ones to go to the dentist. If they had a poor experience in the past, this can potentially become a situation that you may never win. The first thing you need to do is to get the conversation going. Talk to them about the health problems that can come with not taking care of their teeth.

Aside from the risks to the teeth directly, they can also have a higher chance of developing things like diabetes and heart disease. Show them a few websites for gentle dentists in the area, and see if any of them strike a chord. The more you talk about the idea, the more your loved one is going to start feeling comfortable with the idea.

Don't be pushy about them going unless you can tell they are in pain and have some type of a fever. If they will not go in and see a dentist, at least have them go in and see their doctor. A fever is a sign that they have some type of an infection going, and should not be overlooked.

Keep working with them so that they feel better about going, and if nothing else, offer to go in with them or introduce them to your dentist. That personal touch may help.
