How Best to Care for Your Teeth After Having Braces Removed

Posted on 7/23/2017 by Office Manager
Spalding Dental can help with dental care after braces have been removed.
When you have braces, you are used to treating your teeth differently. You have to work hard to ensure that you get your teeth clean. You know that the food you eat can get trapped in your braces and you have to make sure it gets cleaned out. You can't wait for the day that your braces come off and you don't have to worry about the extreme cleaning regimen. But just because your braces are off doesn’t mean your oral hygiene should take a back seat. You still have to brush your teeth and floss, though now you can floss like everyone else. But what else do you have to do, there must be something.

What Happens After Braces

Once you get your braces off you will be fitted for a retainer. A retainer holds your teeth in place so that they will stay straight and not waste those years in braces. Your teeth are held in place by periodontal ligaments. These are a network of fibers that keep your teeth in their place on the jawbone.

When you get braces, your teeth are moved along the jawline to straighten them out or to correct your bite, among other reasons. Since they aren’t anchored in your jaw, it takes time for the periodontal ligaments to adjust to the new position of your teeth. This can take several months. In that time, your retainer will do the job of holding the teeth in their new positions.

You’ll get fitted for your retainer the same day your braces come off. The orthodontist will take x-rays or just bite impressions. There are several kinds, the Hawley Retainer, the clear plastic retainer and the fixed retainer. Your orthodontist will determine which is best for you.
