Chewing on ice cubes is not a good idea. It can really do a lot of damage to your teeth. If you tend to chew on ice when it is around, then you need to make sure that you are keeping it out of the drinks that you will be enjoying during the hot summer months ahead.

This way, you avoid temptation and don't have to worry about doing something out of habit that could damage your teeth in disastrous ways.

Dangers Associated with Chewing on Ice

When you chew on ice, you can hurt your teeth from several angles. First, you could crack your tooth. Ice is a hard substance. It takes a lot of pressure to break it apart with your teeth. This can crack the enamel of your teeth when you chew on it. Second, it can leave you exposed to increased sensitivity.

You may be simply chewing on a piece of ice not thinking about it, and wind up with a shooting pain through one or more of your teeth from being exposed to something that cold. Finally, you could chew on a piece of ice and break off a sharp shard.

This could land in your gums, tongue, cheek, or other tissues in or around your mouth. This type of injury may require you to go in and have an oral surgeon fix the injuries within your jaw.

By keeping ice out of your drink in the first place, you can rest assured that your mouth won't fall victim to these problems. If you have been chewing on ice in the past, talk to your dentist about it. They can then help you by looking for signs of damage within your mouth now, and into the future.
