Knowing When Your Dental Issue Can Wait Until Your Next Appointment

Your teeth are nothing to mess around with. If you are truly not sure if any discomfort you have can wait, call your dentist's office. They will listen to what is going on and help figure out if coming in now would be better than waiting.

However, most things would not fall under any type of an urgent category. If your pain is severe or accompanied by a fever, then you should be a bit concerned.

Learning When a Dental Issue is Serious

If you suddenly are in pain in your mouth, you need to take note of what is going on. If only one area hurts, look and feel around to see if something poked your tooth or gum. Figure out if the pain comes with putting pressure on the area or not. If the pain subsides on its own in a few minutes, then keep notes on when the pain shows up. When it shows up multiple times, you need to call your dentist.

If your pain is really bad, then the best thing to do is call the dentist right away. Typically, this comes when you have a cracked or broken tooth, which could come from biting the wrong way or even a broken cavity that damaged the integrity of your tooth.

The biggest red flag for knowing that you need to go in and be seen right away is pain that also has a fever. This is a worrisome combination and never should be overlooked. It often signals that your mouth has some type of abscess in it, and you need to get that looked at immediately.

Call your dentist if you aren't sure, but always err on the side of caution if you have a lot of pain and a fever. That's a strong indication that you need immediate attention.
