Green tea is considered by many a superfood, with medicinal purposes, not only for your oral health, but for overall health. Some of the oral health benefits of drinking green tea are:

Controls Inflammation

Inflammation is one of the most common issues in oral health and drinking green tea can prevent conditions such as gum disease or gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums and could lead to other serious health problems.

Prevent Tooth Loss

Poor oral hygiene habits can lead to tooth loss. Aside from having good habits at home and visiting our office twice a year, drinking green tea can protect your teeth from tooth loss. According to a Japanese study from 2010, people who drink green tea regularly, kept their teeth longer than those who don't.

Helps Control Cavities

The moisture in the mouth is the ideal place for bacteria growth and this can lead to several problems including cavities. Some of green tea's properties help to lower acidity, which could lead to preventing plaque and controlling cavities.

Oral Cancer Prevention

Green tea antioxidants are believed to help in preventing cancer. There are several studies that suggest antioxidants can slow the growth of cancerous tumors in the mouth and the rest of your body.

Green tea contains the catechin, an antioxidant which could be responsible for several benefits to your oral health. That Japanese study suggests drinking green tea may help promote periodontal health by obstructing the body's inflammatory reaction to bacteria that is harmful to the gums and teeth. You can drink caffeinated or decaffeinated, hot or cold green tea, whatever you prefer.
