What Your Taste Buds Say about Your Health

Posted on 8/13/2018 by Office Manager
What Your Taste Buds Say about Your HealthDoes food suddenly taste different to you? If so, your taste buds may be trying to tell you something. When you eat, the taste buds pick up on flavors and work in conjunction with our sense of smell.

When something goes wrong, your sense of taste may change. These are some of the common reasons that your sense of taste may be altered.

Illnesses that May Affect Taste

Certain illnesses may cause the sense of taste to change. Specifically, infections of the sinuses, throat, or nose are problematic, and a polyp that blocks the nasal passage might also be the problem. A dental abscess or dentures might also be an issue.

Specific illnesses have also been tied to a change in taste. In some people, a change in taste can be an early sign of Parkinson's or Alzheimer's.

Taste Disorders

The most common taste disorder is a condition known as phantom taste perception. With this problem, people experience a lingering, unpleasant taste despite nothing being in the mouth. Other issues may include:

•  Ageusia- An inability to detect tastes, which is rare.
•  Hypogeusia - A reduced ability to taste sour, salty, bitter, and sweet tastes.
•  Dysgeusia - A condition in which a person experiences a persistent foul, metallic, or rancid taste in the mouth. This often accompanies burning mouth syndrome.

In addition to the afflictions previously mentioned, taste disorders can also result from radiation therapy due to neck and head cancers, chemical exposure, and poor oral hygiene.

If you've noticed problems with your sense of taste, let us be your first call. We are experts at all things regarding your oral health. We can inspect your tongue and the rest of the oral tissues to look for the sign of a problem. In the end, you'll be able to enjoy your favorite foods once again.
