What is Fluoride Varnish?

Posted on 10/20/2018 by Office Manager
What is Fluoride Varnish? You probably know that fluoride is essential to keep your teeth healthy. Fluoride protects against tooth decay and is present in toothpaste.

We will also give young patients fluoride treatments as needed when they come in for a regular checkup. They're another type of fluoride that we can offer you or your child to prevent cavities, fluoride varnish.

What is Fluoride Varnish?

Fluoride varnish is a treatment that can prevent tooth decay and is made from resin that contains 5 percent sodium fluoride. This varnish can be applied directly to the tooth. It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat tooth sensitivity and prevent, slow down or stop the development of cavities.

Advantages of Using Fluoride Varnish

One of the most significant benefits of incorporating fluoride varnish as a treatment is ease of use and patient safety. Because this material can be flavored, young patients accept it better, and since it can be tinted to match the color of their teeth, children accept it more willingly.

The greatest advantage of using fluoride varnish is that it can help prevent cavities and reduce the risk of tooth decay as the child grows.

Parents can be comforted by the thought that applying fluoride varnish to their child is painless. Many kids are afraid of any dental procedure, and we do all we can to make them comfortable. If your child is very small, you can even hold them on your lap while our dentist applies the fluoride varnish. The good news is that the process is very quick and will be over in just a few minutes.

According to the American Academy or Pediatrics, all infants should receive an oral screening by the age of 6-months, so please let us take care of your baby's oral health from the start. We have the knowledge to look after the tiniest of patients and they will get used to oral examinations from a young age.
