Composite Dental Bonding
Anchorage, AK

Dental bonding is a restorative and cosmetic procedure that can help fix broken, cracked, or chipped teeth. During the procedure, a tooth-colored composite resin is bonded to the tooth using a high-intensity curing light. Spalding Dental offers dental bonding as an easy and cost-effective way to enhance cosmetics, restore your teeth, and improve your smile.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a versatile procedure that can be used in some situations. Dental bonding should be considered to fix the following issues:
•  Repair decayed teeth (fill cavities)
•  Repair fractured or chipped teeth
•  Close gaps between teeth (diastemas)
•  Increase the length of a tooth
•  Improve the appearance of a discolored tooth
•  Change the shape of an unsightly tooth
•  Protect an exposed root after gum recession
•  Provide a cosmetic alternative to amalgam (silver) fillings

Dental bonding is one of the least expensive procedures on the market today. Because the composite is molded in-office, and without the use of a dental laboratory, the procedure is completed in one appointment. Most bonding procedures are painless and do not require the use of local anesthetic.

Composite resin can also be color-matched to the shade of your existing teeth, which makes bonding discrete and esthetically-pleasing. Bonding is also a conservative option to porcelain veneers and dental crowns, as it requires little or no reshaping of tooth enamel.

Dental Bonding Procedure

During a consultation visit, Dr. Charles Spalding will determine if dental bonding is right for you. This involves the use of X-rays and an evaluation of your teeth and gums. If your teeth have extensive damage or decay, Dr. Charles Spalding may suggest another restorative procedure that better suits your needs.

During the procedure, Dr. Charles Spalding will use a shade guide to select the appropriate resin composite color. Next, Dr. Charles Spalding will slightly etch the surface of the tooth to roughen the texture, and increase the strength of the bond. Your tooth will be coated with a conditioning liquid to further help the resin composite stick.

After the tooth has been prepared, Dr. Charles Spalding will apply the putty-like resin to its surface. The resin will be molded and shaved until we achieve the proper shape. The material is then hardened using an ultraviolet curing light. During the final step, Dr. Charles Spalding will remove any excess material, and polish the composite to match the sheen of your existing teeth.
The whole process usually takes 30 minutes to an hour. You will be instructed to avoid eating or drinking foods that cause stains, for at least 48 hours.

Caring for Bonded Teeth

Bonded teeth should be cared for like your natural teeth. Daily brushing and flossing can help you maintain a healthy and beautiful smile. The composite material can stain, so be mindful when drinking substances like wine, coffee, or tea. Routine checkups and professional cleanings can increase the longevity of your bond. Try to avoid bad habits, like biting your fingernails and chewing on pen caps. If you feel a difference in your bite or sharp edges, consult with Dr. Charles Spalding as soon as possible.
