What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Experiencing any type of emergency, including a dental emergency, can be scary. In your panic, you might not know what to do. This could lead to unnecessary, and expensive, trip to the emergency room. Few dental emergencies warrant a trip to the hospital. Many can be treated in the dental office. What Happens if I Knock Out a Tooth?
If you have knocked out a tooth, the first thing to do is not panic. In many cases, the tooth can be successfully replanted. After you find the tooth, rinse it off under water. Take care to only handle the tooth by the crown. Store the tooth in a jar of milk or salt water until your appointment. If the tooth can be replanted, it is secured using a splint, which aids in holding the tooth in position until your periodontal ligament and jawbone have healed. If the tooth cannot be replanted, we can discuss your options for tooth replacement.
Taking Care at Home
There are a few things that you can do while you wait until your appointment. If you have suffered a chipped or cracked tooth, rinse your mouth out with warm water. If you are bleeding, place a piece of moistened gauze over the affected area and apply gentle pressure. For pain and swelling, over the counter pain relievers and ice packs can be helpful.
